چکیده

Introduction Water is the most abundant constituent of the human body. Human body has 60-70 % of weight due to its water content 1 . Water occupies two main fluid compartments 1. Intracellular fluid (ICF)about two third by volume, contained in cells 2. Extracellular fluid (ECF)-about one third by volume, consist of two major subdivisions  Plasma – the fluid portion of the blood  Interstitial fluidfluid in spaces between cells Specialized ECFlymph, cerebrospinal fluid, eye humors, synovial fluid, serous fluid and gastrointestinal secretion. In the fetus and newborn, the ECF volume is larger than the ICF volume. The normal postnatal diuresis causes an immediate decrease in ECF volume. This is followed by continued expansion of the ICF volume, which results from cellular growth. By 1 year of age, the ratio of the

Complications of continuous renal replacement therapy in children: are all created equal?

Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in pediatric acute kidney dysfunction has evolved in recent decades; however, little objective data exist for complications associated with CRRT. Santiago and colleagues are among the first to document four complications of acute kidney dysfunction in critically ill children: catheterization-related insertion complications, hypotension, hemorrhage, an...

Hyponatremia is Associated with Increased Severity of Disease in Critically Ill Children with Bronchiolitis

INTRODUCTION: Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte abnormality seen in the intensive care unit (ICU), and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Critically ill children with bronchiolitis are at risk of developing hyponatremia, due to impaired renal free water excretion and exogenous sources of excess free water intake. We hypothesize that the development of hyponatremia i...

Hypokalemia at the Time of Admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Increases the Need for Mechanical Ventilation and Time of Ventilation in Critically Ill Trauma Patients

© 2017 Advanced Biomedical Research | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Sir, For critically ill trauma patients who suffer from respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation (MV) is an essential and universal form of treatment.[1] Hypokalemia normally occurs immediately after trauma, and it appears that hypokalemia occurs more frequently in the more severely injured.[2,3] Hypokalemia, a frequen...

Hypomagnesemia in critically ill medical patients.

BACKGROUND Hypomagnesemia is an important but underdiagnosed electrolyte abnormality in critically ill patients. There are many studies to find the prevalence of hypomagnesemia and its effects on mortality and morbidity in these patients. Most of these studies have been carried out in intensive care units caring for patients with medical and surgical conditions and postoperative patients or tho...

Anesthetic considerations for major burn injury in pediatric patients.

Major burn injury remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients. With advances in burn care and with the development of experienced multi-disciplinary teams at regionalized burn centers, many children are surviving severe burn injury. As members of the multi-disciplinary care team, anesthesia providers are called upon to care for these critically ill children. The...
